There are many health benefits from walking. For instance, just 10 minutes extra walking a day can burn an extra 40 calories (Depending on your age, weight, and how fast you walk), which is a total of 14,600 calories burnt over 365 days.

Ways to get walking

Getting involved with your local Walking for Health scheme couldn't be easier.

Post Covid19 finding the health walk schemes closest to you might be a way to connect with others in your community, just enter your postcode or place name in the search box on the Walking For Health website or see what's on offer in your part of the country by clicking on your local region on the map.

You might want to consider joining a challenge, and Diabetes UK has a walking challenge running from  July to September. How about giving it a go?

Join a challenge:

Step it up towards a healthier you in 2023. Join Diabetes UK 1 million step challenge and take at least 10,000 steps a day for three months in 2023 to reach your million.

There are many ways you can put more walking into your daily routine, for example:

  • ditch the car, train or bus and walk all or part of your journey
  • get off public transport one stop early and walk the rest of the way
  • walk to pick up or drop off the kids or grandchildren at school
  • get up after lunch and go for a 10-minute walk during your lunch break
